What is GIMPShop?

(view more screenshots)

GIMPShop is a free Open Source image editor that is similar to the popular Adobe Photoshop. Specifically GIMPShop is a version of the GIMP that has been edited to be more user-friendly for Photoshop users.

GIMPShop was created by Attack of the Show's Scott Moschella. The menu structure and terminology are adapted to to look and feel more like Photoshop, and other adjustments were made to make the GIMP more usable. In the Windows version, the Deweirdifyer Plugin has been used to place all of the various windows into one nesting window, so it will act more like a single program that multiple little programs.. Also the menu structure and terminology are adapted to to look and feel more like Photoshop.

GIMPShop was orginally developed for Mac OS X, but has been ported to Windows, Linux, and Solaris.

For more information - check out GIMPShop on Wikipedia.

I installed your prog on win xp, ran the shortcuts script, and all I get is the normal gimp interface. Any suggestions?

Is planned a GIMPShop version of Gimp 2.29?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at November 25, 2005 4:47 AM

I don't think there is one planned for 2.2.9 there is, however, an alpha version of GIMPShop based on GIMP 2.3.4 available.

The next version of GIMPShop will likely be based on the next minor release of GIMP, not the next micro release.

A Major release is like the first number, from 1.x to 2.x is a major release.

A Minor release is the second number, from 2.0 to 2.1 is a Minor release.

A Micro release is the third number, from 2.2.8 to 2.2.9 is a micro release.

When GIMP goes from 2.2.x to 2.3.x (or 2.4.x) that's when I would expect the next release of GIMPShop.

Of course, since GIMPShop is open source, if you know how to code, or know someone who does, you could release the next version of GIMPShop whenever you'd like! :-)

Hope that Helps!

Just amazing software .. i have always used GIMP on linux and Photoshop on Windows and now I have this seamless software .. good ..

It is pretty cool, right? It makes life so much easier when your switching like that. At work I've got a copy of Photoshop, and, since it was free, and I'm the network admin, I installed GIMPShop as well. I find myself using GIMPShop because it's just easier! GIMPShop rocks!

By Blogger Chad, at February 02, 2006 8:33 AM

Hi! Thank you for wonderful job!

Have you tried already to build Gimp 2.3 for Mac OS X?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at March 08, 2006 4:58 AM

Hi Egor,

GIMP 2.3 is still in the development stage. It's not ready for production use on any operating system. In fact, I don't think there will be a stable 2.3 release. From what I've read, when it's stable, they will release it as 2.4 (that's why there's a 2.3.7 and it's still in beta).

With Scott (the creator of GIMPShop) just getting a new Intel Mac, I'm sure he will soon be releasing a new version of GIMPShop for the Mac. It will probably still be based on GIMP 2.2 - since that's the stable release. When 2.4 comes out, it will likely be ported to Mac, and then made into GIMPShop.

Hope that helps!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at March 17, 2006 7:18 PM

Here's an ebuild!! :-) Can't imagine why it hasn't made it to the official tree though!

Hi there great site although I am having trouble reading the blog entries - maybe a darker colour would be better for people to read.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 22, 2006 7:03 AM

I am trying to do the simplest thing that can be done with Photoshop but I've spent hours trying to do the same with Gimpshop and am very frustrated with it. I need to put a different colored text outline around text on top of a photograph. There seems to be many filter options of little or no value but this filter option, easily found in Photoshop, appears to be missing. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Hello there. Just installed GimpShop 2.2.8 on Win XP and tested it for about 20 minutes. Nice piece of work I must say, as Photoshop was the only reason I did't migrate on Linux yet... but now I'm looking forward to migrate (yes definitly!) after my vacation in september. Cheers & thnx.

P.S. Is there any chance that GimpShop is going to support CMYK image mode any son?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at August 05, 2006 8:53 PM

I downloaded this software and I cannot figure out how to get an image on there to start editing. does anyone know?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at September 17, 2006 4:03 PM

Hi I like the idea a lot. None the less I am trying to install it and for some reason it looks just like Gimp. Is there anything extra I should do? I am running win xp.

Iwould appreciate your help on this I really want to test drive GImpShop =)

By Anonymous Anonymous, at September 18, 2006 2:04 PM

is there any online support for gimpshop?
I installed it, but when I try to open a new image it crashes

By Anonymous Anonymous, at September 19, 2006 8:39 PM

is there a plugin for Linux like the Dewierdifyer plugin where all Gimp windows/frames are contained in one window?

By Blogger yamzzz, at October 28, 2006 2:49 AM

There is a sub-project for The GIMP called GEGL (check Wipedia or http://www.gegl.org/) to ovewrhaul the core to add a lot of missing fatures like colour management and support for various colour spaces like Lab, HSB, and CMYK. It was supposed to have been done by now, but it's proved harder to do than anticipated. A project to examine usability and hence overhaul the interface is also in the works, and slated for integraion after 2.4 is released early next year.

Any plans on making a portable version like gimpportable ?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at November 30, 2006 11:00 AM

Looks nice, but what I get when I try to download for Windows is a 1KB .exe that does nothing? I'm confused.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at December 05, 2006 10:32 AM

Same problem as the last guy... I downloaded the windows .exe and it is only 1KB and doesn't work...

By Anonymous Anonymous, at December 05, 2006 3:38 PM

Sorry about the file, guys. Apparently that host just bailed on us.

Here is a new post with 5 different download sites.

Sorry about the delay.

By Blogger Chad, at December 05, 2006 4:47 PM

Hi everyone and Merry Christmas, Happy New Year. Really nice work, thanx for the Gipmshop.
I have 1 question: when will come out a new gipmshop release?

By Blogger istvan kiraly, at December 28, 2006 4:06 PM

Some people seem to fail to realize the BIG difference is cost. When your in your safe little Windows World... (and when I say safe I mean well it can be safe... some times for months on end) you seem to be so used to dumping out cash for everything that you do not realize that GimpShop is FREE. Yes it may not have every plugin. And in truth plugins are for lazy so in so's that want to make a cool header for their blog site.
So anyways. Cool app and keep working guys.

Is GIMPshop compatible with Windows Vista?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 27, 2007 5:31 PM

I must be missing something here. I can't find any help; it only has about in the help menu. ALso, I can find any place to open files. Do I do something wrong on install? I don't use Photoshop.

By Blogger Unknown, at March 03, 2007 9:14 AM

GIMPshop crashes whenever I try to stroke a path. Also I keep getting theese wierd disc errors when I start it and when I save. It says "Please insert disk into drive ." without saying what drive it is. These errors don't seem to affect anything however.

It seems to me that the dewierdifier works for macs, but all it does for windows is to add a background window. is that correct?

By Blogger David Wollin, at March 25, 2007 4:09 PM

Hi there, thank you very much for GIMPSHOP. i have been held captive by Adobe for long enough. The GIMP for windows provides the ability to modify my RAW/NEF Fuji and Nkon files, does GIMPSHOP provide a raw converter?

Thanks

Is there a useful download link for the Mac version somewhere? The Rapidshare one doesn't work anymore and Filefactory requires registration.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 06, 2007 5:50 PM

I tried to install gimpshop on macosx 10,4 but it does not work. When I click on the dmg file, a program called hexedit opens it and that'it. What am I doing wrong?

Any help appreciated => jeankebos at yahoo dot com.

Is there a help file planned for GIMP? It did not come through when I installed the program...says not available.

Looks very promising!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at August 02, 2007 9:23 AM

Can GIMPShop be used to create a document w/same effects as Daily Prophet newspaper in Harry Potter, i.e., animation window (regret lack of proper jargon here) ?
Thanks

I installed GIMPshop and it finally stopped hanging on the 'font' thing when loading, but now when I try to use it and open a new page/file/whatever they're called (I'm hardly experienced with Photoshop), it crashes on me and has to close.

By Blogger k.a.m.u.r.i., at September 08, 2007 2:21 AM

Just installed Gimpshop and it looks just like the normal Gimp interface.

I see no difference at all.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at November 18, 2007 1:44 PM

Hey guy, what I do in order to keep it from crashing is open an existing photo, use the paint fill option AFTER I resize the image, and it works just fine. It only crashes when you open a new image. That's just my work-a-round until they get a fix for the new image option.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at December 02, 2007 12:58 AM

Really wish there was some kind of support forum for the Windows version of this program. I am getting constant "Entry Point Not Found" errors and was hoping to try it. Oh well, guess I'll have to uninstall since it's not working.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at December 09, 2007 9:30 AM

I installed GimpShop on Windows XP, seems to work fine, except I cann't seem to find how to fit a text string along a path as I would using adobe photoshop or using the simple Gimp. Any idea? Thanks.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at June 13, 2010 12:42 PM

This seems like a very useful graphics editing tool. I am familiar with Photoshop, I have used it in the past. However, I don't want to go pay for the new version as I don't use it that often.

I know this has probably already been asked or mentioned in the help sections: Can you import or use .psd files with this product? or is the look only to give you a feel that you are working with Photoshop?

Anyway... I am about to download. Look forward to seeing how it works. Thanks!
